Service begins before the first tool is lifted.
A bicycle rarely arrives with only one story. A noise may reflect wear elsewhere. A shifting concern may involve adjustment, compatibility or a component approaching the end of its useful life. Before recommending work, we consider the bicycle as a complete mechanical system.
You receive an explanation of what we find and a recommendation proportionate to the bicycle, its condition and how you intend to use it. Additional repairs or replacement parts are discussed before material work proceeds. The objective is not simply to complete a checklist; it is to return a bicycle whose operation makes sense for the riding ahead.

For a road or gravel bicycle requiring considered maintenance between annual services, with routine mechanical adjustment to help keep the bicycle operating smoothly.
Your service includes
- Brake and gear function check with routine adjustment
- Wheel, tyre and drivetrain inspection
- Fastener and mechanical safety check
- Chain lubrication and wear assessment
- Battery charge for supported electronic shifting systems
- Inspection of cables, contact points and visible frame condition
- Light surface clean and final workshop check
Appropriate when
- Your bicycle has received a thorough annual service and now requires interim maintenance
- Shifting or braking requires routine refinement
- You want to maintain smooth operation between more comprehensive annual work
- The bicycle has been stored but remains in serviceable condition
The Core Service includes condition assessment but excludes servicing of the headset, bottom bracket or wheel hubs. These bearing systems influence steering control, pedalling efficiency and how freely the bicycle rolls. Choose the Premium Performance Service if they have not been assessed recently, if the bicycle is ridden weekly, or if its service history is uncertain.
Replacement parts, hydraulic bleeding, bearing work, firmware updates, extensive cleaning and repairs outside the agreed service are separately quoted. During the service, basic installation of a chain, cassette or brake pads purchased from Chainsmith is charged at a flat rate of $15 per item. Client-supplied components and more involved work are charged at standard workshop rates.
Workmanship-related adjustment is available by appointment for 14 days following the service. This does not include new faults, wear, damage, replacement parts, position changes or work outside the original service scope.

- Headset, hub and bottom bracket inspection and service where serviceable
- Reinstallation, torque setting and complete mechanical adjustment

- Drivetrain preparation and application of premium drip wax lubricant where compatible
- Frame finish protection appropriate to its surface
- Final workshop assessment and aftercare discussion

Same-day appointment model

Reserve your workshop date, then bring the bicycle the afternoon before or during the nominated morning drop-off period. Where the agreed scope and required parts permit, we aim to complete the service for collection that afternoon.
If assessment identifies additional work, unavailable parts or a condition that makes same-day completion impractical, we will contact you and agree on the appropriate next step.
Workshop appointments are limited each day so agreed work can receive the appropriate time and attention. Advance booking is recommended, particularly before events, travel or significant rides.
Beyond the workshop
The work remains connected to the ride.
A bicycle is not maintained for the workstand. It is prepared for familiar roads, weekly training, long weekends, gravel detours and the hours you choose to spend riding.
It may also be prepared for a sportive such as Peaks Challenge, a criterium, time trial, triathlon or gravel race. Chainsmith’s rides and Strava community keep the workshop connected to the conditions our clients encounter around Sydney and beyond. That perspective does not replace mechanical evidence, but it helps keep recommendations grounded in how bicycles are actually used.

What bicycles does Chainsmith service?
Chainsmith specialises in road and gravel bicycles. We service bicycles from Chainsmith and other retailers, including premium Italian, Australian and international brands. Selected non-electric commuter and hybrid bicycles are also welcome to book a Core or Premium Service. We do not service e-bikes.
Do you service e-bikes?
No. Chainsmith does not service e-bikes. Our workshop is structured around non-electric road, gravel and selected hybrid bicycles.
Do you work with Campagnolo, Shimano and SRAM?
Yes. Chainsmith works across Campagnolo, Shimano and SRAM road and gravel component systems, including electronic shifting. We are an Authorised Campagnolo Pro Shop and have extensive experience with Campagnolo-equipped bicycles and custom builds.
Will my bicycle be ready on the same day?
Same-day completion is our objective for pre-booked services where the agreed work, bicycle condition and availability of required parts permit. If assessment reveals additional work or a part must be sourced, we will contact you and explain the revised timing.
Do I need to book?
Yes. Booking reserves workshop time and gives the team the best opportunity to assess and return your bicycle efficiently. Unscheduled work may be declined when the workshop is fully committed.
What happens if replacement parts are required?
We will explain the finding, recommend an appropriate part and seek approval before significant additional work proceeds. Parts, installation and repairs outside the selected service are separately charged.
Can you install components purchased elsewhere?
Potentially, provided the component is genuine, suitable, complete and compatible with the bicycle. Standard installation rates apply. Please discuss externally supplied components with us before your appointment.
Can you service a bicycle purchased from another shop or online?
Yes. The bicycle does not need to have been purchased from Chainsmith. We regularly assess and service road and gravel bicycles from other retailers, online purchases and second-hand ownership.
Where is the Chainsmith workshop?
Chainsmith is located at 482 Cleveland Street, Surry Hills NSW 2010, close to Moore Park, Centennial Park and Paddington. The workshop serves clients from across Sydney, including the Eastern Suburbs.
What should I remove before drop-off?
Please remove personal bags, computers, lights, bottles and other loose accessories unless they are relevant to the work being assessed. Storage space is limited, so helmets and unrelated belongings should remain with you.
