Not so long ago, bicycles often changed hands through the newspaper, a local noticeboard or a conversation between riders. The audience may have been smaller, but there was usually some connection between the person selling the bicycle and the person coming to see it.

Today, almost any bicycle can be shown to thousands of people within minutes. In theory, selling one should be easier than ever. In practice, many riders have discovered otherwise.

We have all seen the warnings surrounding Facebook Marketplace, eBay and similar platforms: fraudulent enquiries, questionable buyers and sellers, and transactions that do not feel quite right. A little wariness is entirely reasonable.

Even a genuine buyer can strain the most tolerant personality. There is the barrage of “Is this available?” questions, requests for additional photographs and measurements—or free delivery—bargaining before the bicycle has been seen and schedules to coordinate. Then there is the familiar no-show.

For someone selling a significant bicycle, there is a longer list to manage:

• Components to identify accurately
• Servicing or mechanical checks to arrange
• Proof of original sale or service history
• Size, riding history and mechanical condition
• Photographs that show both character and condition honestly
• A suitable inspection and handover point
• A safe method of payment
• How much personal information to share
• Enquiries to monitor across every platform

Is it any wonder that many excellent bicycles remain where they are?

There are plenty of reasons to sell a bicycle: a rider’s position has changed, a new bicycle has taken its place, or life simply no longer allows it to be ridden as often as it deserves. Groupsets and components can meet the same fate after an upgrade: carefully packed away, still useful, but waiting for someone to find the time to move them on.

The relief is that there are increasing ways to manage the sale of a premium bicycle without having to manage very much at all.

Phil’s Pegoretti Marcelo is one such bicycle, although certainly not an ordinary one.

Purchased to be ridden and maintained meticulously by its original owner, it carries the marks of careful use alongside an unusually well-documented history. Its considered Italian build, original-specification repaint and feature in RIDE magazine in 2007 all form part of its story.

Preparing the Pegoretti for its next rider meant looking beyond a short specification and an asking price. The bicycle was assessed and serviced, its components and geometry documented, and its details photographed properly. Those details allow another rider to understand what they are considering before arranging an inspection.

This has led us to create a quieter, more considered place for remarkable pre-owned bicycles and selected components. It is intended to make the process clearer for both sides—and to help good equipment return to the road rather than remain stored away.
